Freaky Friday: What Constitutes Good Porn?
There is a lot of porn out there, and only so many hours in the day, so how can one separate the good porn from the not-so-good porn? I’m sure you could ask ten different people and get ten different answers, all based on personal tastes. Some people go for *ahem* realism and/or plausibility in their porn and look for movies and images with which they can relate and/or insert themselves (ha ha) in their fantasies. Other people have more of a fetishistic interest in highly specific sexual scenarios, either from their own personal experience or out of sheer curiosity in something with which they lack first-hand experience. A person’s sexuality is a very deep and murky subject matter, something that is less about conscious choice and more about instinct–primal, subconscious desire. To say that pornography is merely a “masturbation facilitator” is to trivialize the important role it plays in society, especially in the male psyche. It is a great mirror on the human condition, but a mirror that is typically kept covered and out of sight.
Of course, no one is interested in my theories regarding the social impact of pornography; you all just want to know what I think constitutes good pr0n and see some examples of it. I would say that I fall in the category of people who watch porn to see things that I do not experience on a regular basis (or at all, as the case may be). However, I have little interest in any of the more extreme and fetishistic prurient pieces that are available–those seem to be favored more by closet cases and other troubled members of my species. (I have to say “little interest” rather than “no interest” since I am, after all, a member of a “support group” for men with large endowments.)
No, my real preference is for images and representations of intimacy–not just sex, but real closeness and togetherness. Love, even. For me, the best porn is a thing of beauty, the acts portrayed are sincere ministrations of individuals who actually care about one another. It is careful, it is deliberate, it is both passionate and compassionate. It is less about the specific acts involved and more about the bonding between the participants. It is trusting another individual wholly and completely while in one’s most vulnerable state–and the fulfillment of that trust.
Such is what I lack in my life, and the primary substance of my desires.
