On Presidential Candidates…

I found this on the web somewhere. It sums up my political views pretty well.

The Silence of an Old Friend: Update

A few weeks ago, I posted about not hearing from my oldest friend for several months. Well, there’s a bit of an update on that.

It really stuck in my craw that I hadn’t heard from Jeff in so long, so when I was visiting with mom a few weeks ago, I asked her to do some reconnaissance for me. She and Jeff’s mom are also friends, and have known each other for years as well, so I asked her if she could contact Jeff’s mom and find out, once and for all, why he’s been silent for so long. This was back in November, and I never heard any updates, so I just assumed mom had forgotten about it. Turns out, she did forget about it… but she didn’t forget to ask, she just forgot to tell me what Jeff’s mom said.

According to his maternal unit, Jeff has temporarily taken up residence in Iowa and is actively campaigning for… *sigh* I can barely stand to type it… Ron Paul for the 2008 election.

*shudder*

His mom says that in the entire time that he’s been up there, he’s only called her twice, so that makes me feel better about him not calling me. But at the same time… ugh ugh ugh. I should have known that the truth of the matter would not be very pleasant.

Christmas Wishes

I hope you have a Merry Christmas with all the people you care about. Religious or secular, try to look beyond the simple consumerism of the holiday and see the real significance of setting aside time to reflect and to visit with loved ones. May your holidays be filled with peace, joy, and love.

Free Rice!

What better way to do something nice for the holidays than to play a free online game that actually helps feed third-world countries when you get answers correct?

Free Rice

It only took me a couple of minutes to pay for 1,000 grains of rice; if you devoted some time to it, you could really rack up some impressive totals. The site has only been running since October 7th, and they’ve already been able to donate over 10 billion grains of rice.

UPDATE: I did the math; assuming a weight of approximately 20 mg for each grain of rice (a conservative estimate), the total amount of rice purchased from proceeds to date translates to about 240 1/2 tons.

Life Updates for Solstice

  • Work continues to suck.
  • Almost done with Christmas shopping; if I’ve forgotten anyone after tomorrow, they’re just going to end up with money.
  • Tried a Dos Equis Amber this evening; not bad.
  • Don’t know what I need worse right now: a relationship or distractions to keep my mind from a relationship.
  • Still trying to decide what to do without next year; possible candidates include fried food, caffeine, cheese, or recreational internet.
  • Here’s some fancy shit.

Unsurprising News

Today, I learned that my 4-year-old godson has been diagnosed with autism. Family is understandably upset, but it was a bit of news that took few of us by surprise. Several of us (myself included) suspected that he wasn’t developing socially the way he ought to be, and while he seems quite intelligent in terms of knowing things, he lacks the ability to effectively communicate.

I don’t know the details yet, other than his mother was told he exhibited a high-functioning type of autism. It is yet unclear how much of a “normal” life he’ll be able to lead, but I am certain he’ll be well cared for.

If anyone has any advice or recommendations of reading materials, I’d appreciate it.

Jobs with Benefits

My current place of employment does not offer domestic partner benefits. I’ll probably have to move away for that sort of thing. I guess until I find someone who treats me right and who wants to assist me with “domestic affairs”, it won’t be that much of an issue. “Domestic partners with benefits” sounds like a step up from “friends with benefits”… still second-class compared to the legally binding arrangements of the hets.

Wonder if Todd from Survivor: China has a domestic partner?
